Treasure in Heaven

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Jesus tells a parable about a treasure beyond comparison. The story involves a man who finds treasure in a field, the treasure is so great, beyond all comparison, of inestimable value, and so the man gives up everything to have that treasure, and does so with joy (Mt 13:44). The parable teaches us that being a part of God’s kingdom is of more value than anything in this world, in fact the riches of treasures of this world are a poor comparison, they simply do not stack up.

Jesus’ teaching to us on what to do with our possessions is somewhat striking by the values of this age—in Matthew 6 he teaches his followers that we ought not to store up treasure on earth, bound to perish, fade or even be stolen! Rather we should store up treasure in heaven, not wealth, but the treasure of eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ.

One wonders about the first century world Jesus walked in, and their relationship to wealth and possessions. When John the Baptist came to preach a message of repentance and preparation for the coming Christ, he was asked by people how they ought to get ready. What should they be doing to bear the fruit of repentance? John’s answers in Luke 3:10-14 are somewhat surprising—he gives three answers, all related to money and possessions! People should share their clothes and food (v10); the tax collectors shouldn’t overcharge (v13); and the soldiers should be content with their wage, and not extort (v14).

How much does our approach to money indicate something about our spiritual lives?

What do we think about the man who gave up everything to grasp hold of God’s kingdom? A risky investor? Some-what foolish? Or rich beyond comparison because he has what can never be bought.

If we adopt Jesus mindset in Mt 6 of treasure in heaven, it helps us think about giving, and not keeping, knowing that when we die, we leave it all behind. Why not think about ‘sending some ahead to heaven’ by supporting the spread of the priceless kingdom of God in the present age? Generosity is counter cultural, but could it be a better way of life?

In Christ’s Love,

Craig Olliffe Senior minister
